You probably already know that the HQ Amara 20 is one of the most popular longarms on the market. At Nebraska Quilt Company, we love this machine for providing users with a great experience for everything from baby blankets to king-size quilts.

Today we want to spend some time exploring the stitch regulation modes on the Amara. Knowing how these function can help you decide how to plan your next project.

Manual Stitching Mode

We’ll start with Manual Stitching mode. You’ll choose the exact number of stitches per minute you want to sew (the Amara 20 runs anywhere from 25 to 2500 SPM). (You can also choose one of the three preset speeds at this time.) The faster you move the machine, the longer the stitches become, so in most cases you’ll want to maintain a steady speed.

Cruise Stitch Mode

Think of the Amara Cruise Mode like cruise control on your car. Once you’re on the highway, you pick the speed you want to travel and push the control button.

With Cruise mode on the Amara, you pick both your speed (SPM) and the number of stitches per inch (Amara’s SPI ranges from 4 to 24 stitches per inch). Once you hit Start/Stop on the handlebars, stitching begins. When you begin to move the machine, a consistent stitch length and speed will be maintained until you press the Start/Stop button again (just like hitting the brakes).

Precision Stitch Mode

If you’re doing ruler work,  Precision Mode is a great option. In this mode, the machine is more dependent on your movements than in Cruise Mode.  You’ll start by selecting the SPI on the screen. Next you’ll hit the Start/Stop button and begin moving the machine. This movement will trigger the stitching to start. The machine stitches only when the machine is moved. When you stop moving the machine, the needle will pause in mid-stroke. Move the machine to resume stitching. (If you walk away and forget to hit the Stop/Start button, after two minutes the machine will time out and require you to hit the button to start quilting again.)

One thing to keep in mind when in Precision Mode– stitching can happen accidentally if the machine is bumped. Keep your big dog (or big husband!) out of the room while you’re running in this mode!

Learning Your Stitch Regulation Modes

The best tip we have for getting the most out of the HQ Amara 20’s stitch regulation modes is to PRACTICE! Load the frame with some practice fabric and batting and start playing with the SPI and SPM to see how each mode and adjustment behaves. Try out your rulers. Try out your microquilting pebbles. Keep a notepad handy so you can jot down observations.

Schedule a demo if you’d like to explore stitch regulation modes for yourself! At Nebraska Quilt Company, we are committed to the quilt community. We’re your source for classes, retreats, machines, patterns, fabric and more! Visit us online or in store to learn more.
