Welcome to Machine Embroidery!

As sewing machine technology advances, manufacturers are offering a wider range of sewing machines with embroidery capabilities, as well as more standalone embroidery machines. Machine embroidery enthusiasts love that stitchwork adds layers of intricate detail and personalization to any creation. Are ready to try machine embroidery? Our overview will help you feel more confident as you begin.

Machine Embroidery Basics

Hoops

If you’ve embroidered by hand, you already know the concept. The outer and inner hoops secure the fabric so you can pass the needle through the fabric as you stitch. Embroidery machines use a similar hoop. As the machine operates, it moves the hoop along x and y axes according to the programmed instructions while the needles moves up and down. Hoops range in size; the smallest are few inches in diameter, while the largest hoop on the market is almost 14” across! (You’ll find that on the Pfaff Creative Icon 2.)

Computerized operation

Embroidery machines interpret programmed digital designs. Machines typically come pre-loaded with a selection of designs and fonts, with more available for download online. Manufacturers may have design licensing deals with popular brands as well. For instance, the Brother Stellaire has Disney designs built in—we can think of plenty of grandkids who will love seeing their favorite characters on their next blankie!

Customization options

Advanced machines (like the BERNINA 880 E Plus) enable users to import, edit, and manipulate digital designs, adjust stitch parameters, and even create bespoke embroidery from scratch.

Machine Embroidery Supplies

Once you have an embroidery-capable machine and your hoops, you’ll also need the following supplies:

Fabric: for quilts and home decor projects, high-quality quilting cottons are your best option.

Stabilizer: Choose a tear-away stabilizer to reinforce the woven fabric. You’ll be able to easily remove the excess when the embroidery is complete.

Embroidery threads: Embroidery thread is typically thicker and more vibrant in color compared to regular quilting thread, which is usually finer and designed for sewing seams and quilting layers of fabric together with minimal visibility.

Needles: Choose a sharp-tip needle designed specifically for embroidery.

Miscellaneous tools: Scissors, tweezers, and other tools for trimming threads and handling fabric facilitate smooth and precise embroidery.

Beginner-Friendly Embroidery Projects

You’re ready to pick your first embroidery project. Start small.

Quilt blocks: If you’re already a quilter, chances are you have some blocks lying around waiting to be assembled into a quilt. Pick out a few and for embroidered embellishments. Adding a handful of embellished blocks to a full project can completely transform the look of your quilt.

Home decor: Personalize pillow covers, table runners, and wall hangings with custom embroidery, infusing charm and personality into home furnishings.
