Have you started your Spring Cleaning yet? Those quilts don't clean up after themselves!

As you look around your sewing room, are you drowning in fabric scraps and notions, struggling to keep your quilting area organized? Fear not, because today we're diving into some quick and easy DIY storage solutions that will help you tame the chaos and reclaim your quilting sanctuary. With just a few hours and some fabric from your stash, you can create functional and stylish organizers to keep everything in its place. We’ve included links to free patterns and tutorials- we hope you find the inspiration for your next project below!

Fabric Storage Cubes:

These versatile cubes are perfect for storing fabric bundles, quilt kits, or even finished quilt blocks. We’ve all seen standard cubes at the big box stores, but they’re often quite ugly and flimsy. When you make your own, you are also adding to the custom décor of your sewing space. And by opting for a more rigid stabilizer, your storage cubes work freestanding on any shelf or tucked inside a cube system.  With simple square panels and a bit of folding and stitching, you can whip up several of these in no time. Customize the size to fit your needs and mix and match fabrics for a playful look.

Fabric Baskets:

Fabric baskets are great for corralling smaller items like thread spools, rotary cutters, and snips. With a sturdy interfacing and a bit of quilting, these baskets hold their shape well and add a touch of charm to your quilting space. Experiment with different prints and colors to match your decor.

Divided Wall Organizers:

Keep your sewing notions neatly organized with a divided organizer. This project involves sewing rows of pockets or compartments onto a fabric panel. Our recommended pattern uses also includes open loops that are perfect for all your scissors. Hang it on the wall or hook it over a door for easy access to all your tools and supplies.

Armchair Organizer:

An armchair organizer is a must-have for cozy convenience. This project consists of a long fabric panel with multiple pockets that drapes over the arm of your chair. The extra length allows you to tuck it under the seat cushion to secure the organizer in place. Store whatever you reach for when you’re relaxing in your chair: a book, reading classes, tv remotes, and other essentials.

Tote Bags:

You can never have too many tote bags. (We know this because if you do have too many, then you store them all in another tote bag and then your problem is solved!) If you need a quick gift for a friend (or yourself), a tote bag featuring beautiful fabric will always be appreciated. We love a tote bag with a boxed bottom for easiest access. This design provides ample space for a trip to the quilt shop or anywhere else. Add a pop of color with fun fabric prints or embellishments.

Thread Catcher and Scrap Bin:

Keep your sewing area tidy with a handy thread catcher and scrap bin. These projects are smaller and use lighter interfacing; they need to stand open, but not be too rigid. As you trim threads and snip fabric pieces, simply toss them into the thread catcher hanging off the edge of your table. When it's full, empty it into the scrap bin for easy disposal or later use in your stash-buster projects.

We like the squared design of these small fabric bins: Squared Elements Fabric Bins

Remember, the key to successful DIY storage solutions is to make them both functional and visually appealing. Don't be afraid to mix and match fabrics, experiment with different sizes and shapes, and personalize each project to suit your needs. With these quick sewing projects, you'll have your quilt shop organized in no time, leaving more time for what you love most—quilting!
